Only a few years ago, crop farmers were fighting the cruel hand of fate with their backs firmly against the wall. Overseas production had driven down demand, resulting in bottom prices. If that wasn’t bad enough, a host of pesticide- resistant insects were eating way through the crops, and growers were almost powerless to stop them. Today, even if things aren’t as rosyrosy as growers would like them to be, pest control isn’t nearly the headache it was a decade ago. With the of a whole new family of insecticides, the job is likely to get even easier. "We’ve got the best tools to control insects that we have ever had in the history of synthetic chemicals,’ says one crop farmer. But for now the issue is money. The new chemistry is very expensive and many farmers haven’t had an incentive to use it on a scale.
