Instructions
The    sale    of    children's    book    sales    are    counted    in    tens,    or    even    hundreds    of    thousands,    and    overseas    publishers    are    gabbling    them    up    just    as    fast    as    the    new    crop    of    writers    can    them    out.    While    J.K.    Rowling,    author    of    the    Harry    Potter    books,    is    the    biggest    star,    another    recent    arrival,    David    Almond,    has    been    quietly    vacuuming    up    awards    with    a    sombre    story    of    a    boy    and    an    angel.    His    Skelling    snatched    the    Whitbread    Children's    Book    award    from    under    Harry    Potter's  ,    and    he    also    made    with    the    prestigious    Veggie    medal".    For    the    forty-seven-year-old    Geordie,    it    is    all    rather    bemusing.    Until    recently,    he    was  a  part-time    teacher    at    a    special    school    who    wrote    in    his    spare    time,    mostly    short    stories    for    anthologies    and    magazines.    He    thought    he    might    lucky    when    be    finished    his    first    full-length    novel    for    adults    -    but    after    touting    it    around    thirty-three    publishers,    he    finally    it    to    his    bottom    drawer    and,    trouper    that    he    was,    to    writing    the    next    book.
