An editor does not need to be a superman (or a wonderwoman). But he must be able, energetic, resourceful, quick, patient and have lots of stamina. Especially in an age of high technology, an editor must know exactly how his paper is and be able to do it himself. He must be good enough, at , to do the jobs of everyone on his stif, bar one or two specialists. And the Finalists themselves must be aware of this. An editor can inspiring fear among them, but admiration, or at least respect with awe, will produce better work. My advice to editors is not to the job - still less themselves - too seriously. It is the paper, which has a life, a character and a spirit of its own, which matters. Editors may feel like little tin but once they are 'ex' they are of no more significance than the discarded model wife of a billionaire.
