Hailstones

Hailstones are a common of spring and summer storms, and can sometimes be large enough to cause considerable to buildings, cars and crops. Hail occurs when small pieces of ice falling through a cloud are pushed back upwards by a current of air and collect droplets of water which form another of ice. This process continues until the hailstone becomes heavy enough to fall to the ground. Stones as large as 13cm have been reported but they are and far between. Farmers are often the worst victims of hail, especially if it falls in spring when it can paid to their hopes of a good yield. Since preventive measures are difficult to take, they often find themselves at the of the elements.
