'Uncanny valley' is the term for the uncomfortable feeling many people experience when viewing or interacting with human-like robots or animated characters. One example of this was the film Polar Express which animated live actors using motion- techniques. Many people reported feeling disturbed by the 'actors' that looked almost, but not quite, human. It is also a reported by people who have come into contact with life-like robots. A department store in Tokyo has employed a robotic receptionist, but say there is something creepy about her near human-like appearance. One explanation for this reaction, according to scientists, is that, when people see robots trying but failing to mimic human movement, the motor-control part of the brain becomes very active, just as it does when witnessing human of movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease.
