Many kinds of satellites built for scientific purposes now Earth. Long before the Russian satellite Sputnik, scientists looked forward to the day when they could observe Earth and the universe from orbiting satellites. They believed these devices would help them to old mysteries and to make new discoveries about the universe. And they were right. In 1958, the first satellite by the United States, Explorer 1, discovered the Van Allen radiation belts around Earth. Since then, other scientific satellites have added to our knowledge of the universe. One satellite, in particular, the Infrared Astronomy Satellite, or IRAS, has helped out many mysteries of the universe.
