Read the following passage.
A. Kenojuak Ashevak was born on October 3, 1927, at a camp on the southern coast of Baffin Island. As a child she travelled from camp to camp on south Baffin Island and in Arctic Quebec. When she was six, her father was killed, and her family went to live with her grandmother. Her grandmother taught her traditional skills such as repairing sealskin and preparing caribou hides. The group lived by hunting and moved often, living in igloos and in tents made of animal hide. In 1946 she married Johnniebo Ashevak, a hunter, and they began to have children.
B. In 1952 she was found to have tuberculosis and was sent south to Parc Savard Hospital in Quebec City. She stayed there until 1955, far away from her family. At the hospital she was encouraged to take part in arts and crafts, and she learned to make dolls and do beadwork. The hospital then sold these crafts on behalf of its patients. After she recovered, she began working with the art promoter James Houston, who taught Inuit artists how to make prints. In 1959 she joined other Cape Dorset artists in forming the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative workshop. Her first print was called Rabbit Eating Seaweed.
C. Her best-known image is The Enchanted Owl, a colour stonecut print she made in 1960. In 1970 Canada Post put it on a six-cent stamp marking the one hundredth anniversary of the Northwest Territories. It was the first time the work of a female Inuit artist had appeared on a Canadian stamp. Her art was used on stamps again in 1980 and 1993. She and her husband also made a mural for the Canadian Pavilion at the 1970 world exposition in Osaka, Japan, working on it together in Ottawa the year before.
D. She received many honours during her life. She was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1967 and was promoted to Companion, a higher rank, in 1982. In 1992 Queen's University and the University of Toronto both gave her honorary degrees. In 2001 she became the first Inuit artist named to Canada's Walk of Fame, and in 2008 she received the Governor General's Award for excellence in the visual arts. She died at her home in Cape Dorset on January 8, 2013, at the age of eighty-five.
