You will hear a conversation between two students discussing corporate and tax havens for an essay assignment. Now listen carefully and answer the questions. I've finally started doing the research for our essay assignment. How about you, Neil? Yeah, I just started on the section about corporate havens. Can I ask you some questions? Sure. Actually, I wanted to talk about the topic too, just to make sure I understood what I was reading about. All right. So two places in America are popular as corporate havens. One of them is called Dover. Dover? You mean D-O-V-E-R? I think that's right. That means a lot of companies like to incorporate there. What exactly is that again? It's where a corporation is based, kind of like a home country. An existing corporation can also move to a haven to take advantage of special laws. In very simple terms, it's like changing one's permanent address or town of residence. I see. And those laws have to do with things like taxes. Yes, low corporate taxes are one reason why many corporations will move to another place. Those are also called tax havens, and there are many in the world. Really? Like where? They're usually in countries that are trying to attract a source of income. Bermuda and the Cayman Islands are popular examples. I also remember reading that these types of tax havens were good for large corporations. Yeah, that's because it's hard for a small corporation to move somewhere else and then register as a foreign corporation. I suppose it would be pretty expensive to hire all those lawyers. Yes, well, there are places that are corporate havens for small private corporations. I haven't gone over that reading yet.
