You will hear a conversation in which one person explains how a toilet works. Now listen carefully and answer the questions. Why is this thing always getting stuck? Just open it up and fix it. I don't know how it works. Do you? I've always wanted to know. Sure. The common toilet is made-up of two basic systems, the bowl system and the tank system. The tank is in the big box in the back. Right. Now the bowl system is really only made of two parts, the bowl and the siphon. Despite its simple looks, the siphon is really the main part of what makes the toilet work. The siphon is the curved tube in the back. Yup. See how the water level in the tube of the siphon is the same as the level in the bowl? If you were to add a small amount of water to the bowl, say one cup of water, the level rises equally in the bowl and the siphon. and any water that was higher than the edge of the siphon would simply spill over and is drained away. When you add more water to the bowl, the siphon fills for a split second, which causes the siphon to forcefully suck all the water out of the toilet bowl and drain it away. Oh, I see. So that is where the tank and flushing system come in. Right. When you push the handle of the toilet down, it pulls a chain inside the tank, which is connected to the flush valve. Once the chain pulls the flush valve up, The valve floats out of the way, exposing a hole in the bottom of the water-filled tank. This causes the few gallons of water in the tank to pour into the bowl and siphon of the toilet's bowl system, causing the toilet to flush. So the handle releases the valve, which flushes the water. How does water get back in? That's actually the most complex of the three steps. Once the tank has emptied itself of water, the flush valve falls back into the bottom of the tank. covering the hole so the tank can refill with water. Once this happens, the refill mechanism goes to work. The refill system. Yes. The refill system has a valve that turns the flow of water into the tank on and off. When the buoyant filler float falls due to the lack of water in the tank, water begins pouring into the tank through the filler valve, which gradually floats the filler float to the top, which stops the flow of water into the tank. Even if the filler float were to malfunction, the toilet would not flood. There's an overflow tube, which drains excess water directly out of the toilet, if necessary. Now I get it. The filler float regulates the inflow of water. You got it. And when that's all done, you're ready to use the toilet again.
