You will hear a conversation between a university student and a personnel manager about arranging a period of work experience. Now listen carefully and answer the questions. As part of the first year course, all students have to complete three weeks of practical work experience. Barbara is phoning to make an appointment with the personnel manager of a large company where she would like to do her three weeks training. Good morning, Strings and Brass Imports. Good morning. My name is Barbara Sanchez. I'm a student at the university. I'm doing a postgraduate diploma in Business Administration and I need to do three weeks work experience. My lecturer, Ms. Farrow, recommended that I contact your company to see if I could do my work experience there. I wonder if I could speak to the personnel manager, please. I think his name is Mr Lewis. Yes, that's right. But unfortunately, Mr Lewis is out of the office at the moment. You can make an appointment through me if you'd like, though. Yes, please. I'd like to come for an interview as soon as possible. I'm free all day tomorrow or the next day. Just a moment, please. What about nine o'clock tomorrow? Or any time between nine and eleven thirty if you prefer. No, nine would be fine, thanks. I can use the rest of the day to study then. Nine in the morning then. Goodbye. Yes, thank you. Goodbye. The next day Barbara arrives on time for her appointment and talks to the secretary. Good morning. My name is Barbara Sanchez and I've got an appointment at nine o'clock with Mr Lewis. Oh yes, you phoned yesterday, didn't you? Mr Lewis is waiting for you. You can go straight through to his office. Thank you. Barbara goes into Mr Lewis's office. Good morning. I'm Barbara Sanchez. Good morning. Come in and take a seat. Now, what can I do for you? I'm a student at the university. I'm doing a business administration course, a postgraduate diploma and I need to do three weeks' work experience as part of my course. My lecturer, Miss Farrow, suggested I contact you as you've allowed students before to do work experience in your company. She thought you might accept me. I've got a letter of reference here from Miss Farrow if you need it. Thanks. I'll need that. Yes. Uh, this company seems to have a good relationship with the university. We've had quite a lot of students here over the past few years. Seems to work well. We usually take students are in the second-half of their course. What stage are you at? I'm almost at the halfway mark. I've got some exams to do first in two weeks' time. Then I'll be ready to start before the beginning of the second semester. But I thought I'd get this organised before the exams start. That's a very responsible way of thinking. It's a good idea to get in early. I'm sure there's a lot of students who'll be looking for placements in work experience soon. I could start in three weeks' time if you like. Do you understand what's involved in this type of work experience? I think so. Miss Farrow explained the procedures thoroughly to all the students. I have to work regular hours according to company policy and while I'm here I'll have the opportunity to experience different sections of the company. At the end of the three weeks, I have to write a comprehensive report on what I've learnt as an assignment for Miss Farrow, and I have to give the director of the company a copy of it as well. And I understand you send a report about my work to Miss Farrow, and that will also be a part of my assessment. That's right. You say you'll be able to start in three weeks. That's the 15th, isn't it? Yes. I'll have to discuss this application with the director, of course, and I'm sure you'd like to know as soon as possible if you've been accepted. Yes, please, because if I'm not accepted I'll have to apply somewhere else. I should be able to let you know by the end of the week. Just give your phone number and address to the secretary before you go. Well, thanks for coming in, Miss Sanchez. We'll be in touch with you by the end of the week. Goodbye. Goodbye, Miss Lewis. Thank you for seeing me.
