A. The first news of the sinking came in the form of wireless transmissions, rockets and lamp signals sent out by the stricken ocean liner and picked up by nearby vessels. The first survivors of the tragedy - more than 700 people packed on board the Carpathia, the first ship to reach the scene - reached port in New York three days later. The Carpathia had already sent out news of the tragedy, but its initial wireless reports were confused, leading some papers to report that the Titanic was being towed into harbor. As the full scale of the disaster became clear, journalists scrambled to interview survivors and piece together the final moments of the stricken vessel.

B. Newspapers all over the USA's eastern seaboard splashed with the news as reports came in from the Carpathia's wireless operators. On April 16 the New York Times ran with a list of those who had been picked up by the Carpathia and also updated readers on the status of society figures on board - the celebrities of the day. The paper put the initial death toll at about 1,250. The Washington Post devoted the whole front page of its April 17 edition to the disaster. The paper was already running hard with the human interest angle, pointing out the "great heroism shown in face of death" as the ship went down.

C. By April 28, The New York Times was running a full-page feature based on an interview with a Titanic wireless operator who told the paper how he had to fight off a stoker who was trying to steal a lifebelt from Jack Phillips - the radioman who lost his life sending out distress signals as the ship sank. It also reports on how the band played on as the ship went down.News of the Titanic's sinking was huge news in Britain, where well-wishers had waved the ship off from Southampton less than a week before the sinking. On April 16 the Daily Mirror splashed with a photo of the ship under tow before setting out to cross the Atlantic. The paper's decision to run big with a front-page picture contrasted with the text-based front pages in New York and Washington. 

D. The illustrated papers of the day were picture-heavy, with teams of artists and reporters working on witness interviews, features, and other human interest angles. Two editions of now-defunct British periodical The Sphere led with the Titanic disaster in the following weeks. The first casts London's ubiquitous newspaper sellers as "modern messengers of death".A second edition of The Sphere, one week later, focused on the wireless men who first broke the news to the world.
