CELPIP Practice Reading: Reading Correspondence ID: #62919 Medium The Missing Captions

Read the following message.

Hi Leila,

I heard from the local history group about the window display we planned for the bookstore. Their photograph album cannot leave the archive after all. A loose page was discovered during an inspection, and the group wants to repair it before anyone transports it.

They offered us scanned copies of four photographs instead. These would show the old neighbourhood clearly, although the small captions in the album would be missing. I could type new labels using the notes we took during our visit, but I would want the history group to check them first. I would rather leave a little empty space than display a confident-looking mistake.

Another possibility is to feature the street map that Mrs. Chen lent us and move the photographs to the side panel. That arrangement would still fit our theme, but it would make the display more about how the area changed than about the people who lived here.

Could you look at the side panel tomorrow and tell me whether four photographs will feel crowded there? You arranged last spring's display, so you notice balance better than I do. Please do not ask Mrs. Chen for another item yet. She was generous to lend the map, and we may already have enough once we change the layout.

Thanks,
Marcus

Hi Marcus,

I checked the side panel this morning. Four photographs should fit if we leave a narrow space between them, so the scans can still 7.
. I agree that any labels based on our notes should be reviewed. The missing captions are a reason to be careful, not a reason to 8.

I tried the map in the centre. It is visually strong, but, as you expected, it makes the display feel more focused on 9.
. I think that change is fine if the title mentions both the streets and their residents.

I will not request another loan from Mrs. Chen. We can first see whether the map, scans and labels 10.
. Once the history group checks the wording, I can help mount everything. Thank you for trusting my experience with 11.
