CELPIP Practice Reading: Reading Correspondence ID: #62904 Hard The Shelves Are Not the Welcome

Read the following message.

Hi Omar,

I saw your sketch for replacing the open pantry shelves with numbered lockers. I agree that the current system is untidy: bags sometimes hide labels, and food left at the back can be overlooked. Still, I am uneasy about solving that problem with locked doors.

The pantry works partly because people can stop on their way home without explaining themselves. A locker code, even one freely given, may feel like permission that has to be earned. Last winter, Priya began using the pantry only after she saw me taking a jar from the shelf. She told me the ordinary, shared appearance made the difference.

Could we keep the shelves but add shallow baskets labelled by food type? Your inventory idea would still help volunteers notice shortages, but I would record totals after closing rather than ask visitors to sign items out. I also like your plan for a lower shelf. It would make the pantry easier to reach without changing its informal character.

I know you proposed lockers because you want supplies to stay organized, not because you distrust anyone. If the baskets fail during the next month, I will reconsider. For now, I hope we can test the less formal change first.

I am happy to test baskets first. We can use the inventory idea by 9.
